I first met Jim at the ARRL National Convention in Houston, Texas in 1983.
The Texas DX Society had just recently held the first of the Great Armadillo
Runs, and had put on every county in Texas on the air in a single weekend. Jim
was the winner, he worked every county in Texas, all 254 of 'em ... we were
amazed. We arranged for him to fly to Houston, picked him up, and brought him to
the convention site by helicopter. And we found we had stuck pure gold ...
what a super guy.
After the Armadillo Run, I talked to Ellen about how Jim managed to work all
of the counties. She said he had a Texas road map on the floor of the living
room with model cars following the routes of the rovers so he could time them
and anticipate when they would make the next county line. My memory is fading
but I think there were over 20 of us in vehicles hitting new counties every 30
minutes. I have been trying to conjure up a mental image of that scene in my
head for 20 years, but it still boggles the mind.

RIP, OJ
