It’s not a bad example at all.  We are discussing the REMOVAL of points for operating shortcomings, not for rules violations.

If I transpose letters in a call sign, that is an operating shortcoming, just like missing an easy field goal.

I get no points for the attempted Q, the kicker gets no points for the attempted FG.  Next play.

Keeping the American football analogy going, you won't see points removed for missing a field goal, but that's a poor example.
