Brian,
I worked in the relay center for a while. 8 machines on the fleet bcst, 4
on the nato relay ckts, 2 on pt to pt embassy ckt's and 3 to 4 single
channel to carrier's, tin cans, a pony loop to comsubron and a ship/shore
ckt. All in an enclosed area of 25ftx35 feet.
I say flame torch all of them as I could still hear the racket on my 3 day
off breaks.
I turned one of the monitors off one time and I could decode the print from
the racket coming out of it by ear :)

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I don't miss the racket.
In the Navy, I worked in a Communications Center where there were so many
mechanical TTYs running continuously that OSHA came in regularly to measure
decibels. The Sr Chief would turn off as many as possible prior to any
readings.
I understand that Radiomen commonly suffer tinnitus from such exposure.
During recent ear and sinus infections, I have myself suffered from
tinnitus. It is so annoying!
I was a computer tech, but my roomate, an electronics tech, had a girlfriend
who lived with us who was a mechanical TTY tech.
Oh, the good ole days! Huh? Can't hear ya. :)
