REPLY:

You are getting away from the original question. Hardly anybody favors self
spotting during a contest. The original question was about CORRECTING an
incorrect spot. Should he or shouldn't he? It seems the consensus is to not
correct. 

That is a completely different issue from self spotting OUTSIDE of a contest.
