REPLY:
Assuming you're using MMTTY, either by itself or embedded in another
program, yes you need two serial ports. One for reading the VFO and
another for doing PTT and sending the RTTY keying signal. You could get
by without reading the VFO but it's soooooo convenient.
AFSK, done carefully (watch the drive level!) is fine, but most
experienced RTTY'ers prefer FSK. FSK is more set-and-forget, but either
one can be made to work well. AFSK does have one advantage in that you
can use the AFC and NET functions together to keep your TX and RX
frequencies aligned. FSK can not do the NET function.
