(Please forward this to your clubs and groups!)
I LOVE Field Day! I remember my first Field Day and must say I was
intimidated by it all, and stood back and watched. The next year I
participated with a club and had a great time! I regretted not
participating that first year and all the years prior, since getting
my license. Please don't make MY mistake!
If your club has no plans to put on Field Day this year, but you
would still like to come out and play, the Western Amateur Radio
Association would like to extend an invitation to have you come work with us!
Guest clubs historically take charge of a single station and operate
that station for all 24 hours of the contest. They are responsible
for all their equipment and set-up. This allows a club to
concentrate on a single effort, be able to man it throughout the
event, and not get overwhelmed with the details of a full Field Day
effort. In 2004, the Catalina group (CARA) worked 40 meter
phone. Not only did they have great participation from their club
and Boy Scouts, but they broke our club record for number of contacts
during Field Day for 40-meter phone! Needless to say, we WON the 6A
class that year and placed in the top 10 overall!
We have meetings once a month prior to Field Day in order to organize
this event (see below). Each station has a Captain who lists their
needs (tower, antenna, coax, computer, etc) and we work together as a
group to fill those needs. Again, in 2004 we supplied CARA with
plans for a 40-meter 2-element wire beam, and the boom to support
it. CARA's members bought the wire and built the antenna as a club project.
There is also room for single operators who want to stop in and work
a station. We have a number of CW operators who walk on and operate
and we put on a world class operation! If you are a CW operator,
contact Bob Harrington, AA6PW directly and get into the
rotation!!! bharring7 at aol.com
WARA puts together a serious effort and we do our best to win our
class, but EVERYONE, regardless of skill or ability, gets the
opportunity to operate! If you have never heard of Field Day, we
would especially like to have you come down and check it out! We
also set up a GOTA station for Amateurs and Non-Amateurs alike to
operate in a very low key environment. EVERYONE gets to play!!!
Also, there is a job for everyone! We especially need help setting
up antennas on Friday and tearing it all down on Sunday. Even if you
have NO desire to actually operate a radio, there is still plenty to
do and you can be a real asset! We have a group who's entire job is
to take care of the chuck wagon (FOOD)! Others monitor the generator
or help troubleshoot problems. Some hold guy ropes, drive stakes,
roll out coax, or just supply encouragement and MENTORING! We even
have people who give tours of the site to our visitors. There is a
job for EVERYONE!
Novice or Expert, Young or Old, Newbie or Veteran, we want YOU to
participate in Field Day! If not with WARA, then with someone (and
be sure to contact N6ME on the air!).
WARA is having our second Field Day meeting THIS Friday (4-28-06) and
