To update that recommendation for today's market, replace the
Heil element with a cheap computer mic, and lash it onto the ear
protectors with baling wire. Replace the little speakers with ear
buds, just snake the wire under the hearing protectors.  You can
operate with this headset in a jet engine test bay and still not
be bothered.

If you want something off-the-shelf, buy a Yamaha CM500 Headset.
It will allow about 10dB more noise in, but it's pretty quiet,
and it is comfortable for long-term wear:

Note - The computer mic mentioned above, and the Yamaha, are
electret mics, so you need a rig that can accept an electret
(like a K3), or, you need to run the mic through a computer
sound card, which most serious SSB contesters do anyway.
