Dennis,
FYI January’s EARS meeting speaker happened to be Ryan McCourt from TrellisWare Technologies in Ranch Bernardo. Ryan is a Communications Systems Engineer. He presented some of the interesting work being done at TrellisWare regarding Military HF Data Communications. Apparently, the Military has been focusing on SatCom and other wideband communications channels for some time now, but have renewed interest in “Technology Denied” communications systems over the last few years- and HF is prime spectrum for just that purpose. They have been amassing empirical data on propagation and path variables, and are developing new methods of redundant data distribution over wide bandwidths that will be fade and dropout resistant.
While the question of operations within amateur frequencies did not come up at the talk, I am sure Mr. McCourt will be happy to answer any questions in this regard. While he did not appear to be a ham, I believe one of his coworkers is an EARS member? EARS VP John W9EN did the write up, and may be able to put get you in touch with them.
I hope this information is helpful.

JR
