I thought of doing basically what you did, although I was thinking some
logs or large 6"-thick wooden blocks instead of pallets. The kicker is I
don't have such a tractor but would be interested in buying one if I can
find one cheap enough, since I also need one as a backhoe to dig the
tower base hole as well as some other such work around here. The other
kicker is I've never operated such machinery. And then there's the theft
problem, which is endemic out here. Just last weekend, somebody in
Desert Hot Springs lost a trailer with two dirt bikes when they went
inside the house for 30 minutes after hooking up the trailer to their
truck. He came back out after supper and the trailer with bikes was
gone. A neighbor across the street saw the thieves but didn't realize
what they were doing at first; he finally figured it out when the
thieves hit the gas to get away. This guy said he hopped in his truck,
hauled rear end out of his neighborhood, and actually saw his trailer in
the distance hauling rear end up highway 62... which, you guessed it:
leads right into Morongo Valley, through Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, then
29 Palms.
Also, I'm trying to find a scrap metal place within a couple hours drive
for such things as small I-beams, pipe and such with which to make a
hoist or gin pole. Closest so far seems to be in Fontana but they don't
let the public in, you have to first inquire then they'll bring it out
for inspection or take you back to see it if they have something. How
can you sell something when nobody knows what you have and can't see it,
and you're not friendly to the public??
