The U.S. military (Department of Defense) discontinued the use of CW (Morse
Code) in 1995, including the use of code on Military Affiliate Radio System
(MARS) frequencies and nets.
Poor propagation on the high frequency bands has resulted in the inability
to communicate between stations and pass traffic many times in recent years,
despite the use of high tech digital communications techniques.
In a reversal of military policy and doctrine, the Director of MARS, on May
29, 2008, has issued an order to begin training of Morse Code on military
MARS channels.
Unfortunatly, in the thirteen years since Morse Code was used on military
channels, training manuals and documentation has disappeared as to how to
conduct Morse Code training and nets.
DXers could have saved them a lot of trouble if they had ask us first. We
knew all along, CW works, when all else fails!
