[SEDXC] TUNER CAPS

I agree with Jim W., Mike, I think in the MFJs its dependent on which
model, and you might have to open it up to know for sure. There is
possibly one operational issue however. L-Network tuners will only have
one setting which accomplishes the match, but Pi network tuners often
have two different settings that will provide 50 ohms. In that case,
one is the one you want, and the other will result in either very high
circulating currents or very high voltages. The HV case in particular
is bad news and why the switches in MFJ tuners not infrequently get
arc'd over. I think - but this is something of a guess - that knowing
which side of the dial is the low capacitance side can help you pick the
"good" match point from the "bad" one.
I much prefer L- Network tuners, there is one less adjustable component
and only one set point. The Ten-Tec 258 series are all hi-power
L-Network tuners and good performers. They won the QST product review
shoot-off of four hi-power tuners about 10 years ago - and the other
three were PI type.

From information on MFJ tuners it appears it is just the opposite with max dial settings equaling minimum capacitance. Not that it really matters as far as how well the tuner works but just wondered if anyone had looked at this situation before. 73 Mike K4PI
