[Skimmertalk] [RBN-OPS] Attention RBN Skimmer Ops

Unless you have turned it off at least from win7 on the ntp sync defaults to running. Having something checking that every 5 minutes is kind of a waste I would think. Having the server send back a time occasionally to check what time the aggregator time is and not telling the operator if there is a problem is also kind of a waste.

I'll have to defer to W3OA for details on exactly how the Aggregator syncs the host computer's time, but it is precisely the issue of network transit times that we're trying to get a handle on, so we really need good timestamps from as many Aggregators as we can. During CQWWCW we saw a wide variety of delays, including a lot that were negative numbers. Rather than assume a hole in the space-time continuum, we concluded that some computer clocks were off, and decided it would be worthwhile to incorporate NTP sync in the Aggregator rather than impose on a bunch of RBN Skimmer ops, of varying degrees of computer savvy, a requirement to install separate time sync.

Dick, anything I've missed?

p.s. most reasonably recent windows computers are already set to do a sync

hate to have a competing time setter running just in case there was a
problem. a better solution would be to have the aggregator send it's time
to the rbn and then get feedback on it's clock error or network transit time
problems similar to the frequency error feedback we get now. that way the
operator could adjust their clock or investigate slow network problems if
needed.

Hi Pete, thanks for the heads up. That will not happen here as I already
lock all of the network to an ntp pool and certainly don't want to downgrade
the setup.

When you have time, it would be great if you would download Aggregator
4 beta 6 from the RBN web site

 <http://www.reversebeacon.net/downloads/aggregator/rbn_aggregator-40b6.exe> <http://www.reversebeacon.net/downloads/aggregator/rbn_aggregator-40b6
.exe <http://www.reversebeacon.net/downloads/aggregator/rbn_aggregator-40b6.exe> >

and run it in yourSkimmer/SkimServ installation feeding the RBN. This
beta incorporates a feature that precisely adjusts the computer clock
it is running on, using NTP. The purpose of having precise Aggregator
time is to measure the delay between spots coming out of Aggregators
and being posted on the web site/written to the database.

Thanks!
