If its a PTO problem it comes from either lubrication or a wear problem.
With age the grease gets lumpy. The slug is spring loaded and that tends
to move the screw around the lumps. And it also makes it take more
torque at the low end of the band so troubles that I've had things like
nothing happening when I turned the knob are due to wear where the balls
of the vernier drive run in the shaft and the outer race. These are
parts that come in the kit. Its also possible to get end play into the
shaft from the outer race wearing so that the slug is easily moved in
and out by touching the knob or by speaker vibration.

As others have pointed out, loose board grounding screw can also
contribute to similar vibration sensitive changes in frequency.
