I own the TS-590 and am a member of two discussion reflectors about it,
and try to keep up on the buzz.
I have heard nothing about the Eagle to suggest it has any problems on
SSB or with its ALC in common with the TS-590.
The only negative comment I have heard about the Eagle is that its NR
circuit is disappointing to some operators. Nevertheless, I also
believe a) this has largely been ameliorated by recent firmware
updates; and b) that it is, in any case, a fairly subjective
matter, and one's take might vary depending on one's expectations, on
differences in operating styles, and differences in the types and
amount of noise at his particular location. Moreover, the most recent
comments I have heard indicate the latest firmware release greatly
improved the feature. It worked swell on the Eagle I recently played
with.
In any case, I have not heard any complaints about the Eagle that
mirrored any comments about the TS-590. While I happen to enjoy the
TS-590, I am confident you would enjoy the Eagle.
I believe one rig might appeal more to you than the other only because
if differences in feature sets, ergonomics, audio characteristics, and
the like. For example I like using a separate receive-only antenna,
but the Eagle has only one antenna input. The Eagle does not cover
every band, or have a general coverage receiver, but you may not be
interested in these features, and prefer the Eagle for other reasons.
For another example, you might prefer how to access and adjust bandwidth
filters on one versus the other - but these are more matters of
personal preference, than of performance.
You might consult the Eagle's user guide to see how various tasks are
accomplished and how various features are adjusted, to see if the rig is
a good fit for you. For example, I like my 590, but I much prefer how
the Omni VII operates - I find it is quicker and easier to do certain
things on it. Additionally, I prefer the audio qualities of the Omni
VII and Orion II over those of the TS-590 - but you might disagree,
based on your own predilections. I find the 590 a bit on the harsh,
treble side... whilst I believe the Eagle has super smooth and rich
audio - especially on a external speaker or on headphones.
As far as I can tell, the Eagle is a solid, reliable and ergonomically
well designed rig, which should equal or surpass the 590 in daily use -
and the rigs do not share any common problems. While no rig is perfect,
the Eagle it does NOT have any of what I would call "show stopper" issues.
Just MY take. Good luck.
