Well, fellow topbanders, I had a very surprising time with my short 31
foot high Unihat Antenna. With a small increase to 38 radials I really
enjoyed this past weekend with some very nice operators. The SSB 160
contest was very nice. I don't know if the Radio God smiled on us and we
had special condx., but I was able to make contact with XE1RCS in
Mexico, K5IUA in TX, AE7H in AZ and many many other folks with the
antenna and 800 watts from my SB1000 linear.
I have elected to go with the laying down of the radials in my project
with coat hangers to hold them down until the grass grows this spring.
The Edge Trimmer
is good for a short run to bury the ends of each radial. The coil that
takes the mast portion of the Unihat to ground had to be increased to
get the system back to resonate on 160M. Thank you MFJ for the 259
analyzer. Thanks to you folks also for the many ideas for laying out the
ole radials. If I were going with 90 or so at 120 feet long I would use
the more automated ways that were suggested. I'm waiting for more wire
to finish it out to the 60.
