      Hmm. Are you talking about a brake for the haul line (this would be to
take the load instead of the ground crew holding it)? I use a mountain
climbing ascender in an upsidedown configuration. That way it slips when
you're pulling on the haul line but it locks up when you lower the load
slightly and put some weight on it. Check the REI web site and look at a Gibbs
Ascender or similar. 

     The other way to do it is to tie the haul line off on the tower or
similar anchor. The ascenders make it SO EASY.
