I disagree with the below statement that 3 db is not a big difference.
Unless S/N is largely exceeding the QSO needs, whose is not typical for 
most of the amateur traffic were S/N ratios are at minimal limits(weak 
signals, low power, marginal antennas, noisy locations, pile ups etc.) 
a 3dB antenna gain is a huge amount of strenght able to turn a 
background noise into a discernible signal. 
In other words "to hear (be heard) or not to hear (be heard)".
