He was largely right. The dipole does have gain that the vertical
doesn't,
ground reflection gain. But i've worked much dx in my life with ground
mounted
verticals, and for what they are and what they do, they do pretty good,
especially
with lots of radials. Any antenna is better than none.
The trouble with speaking in generalities is that you can't get your
point across
to those that need everything carefully spelled out to them. An astute
observer
takes generalities and finds where the lines are, in his experience.
The elmer didn't mean that gain had no place and purpose, he was
suggesting
that if the directionality was there, then chances were that adaquate
gain was there
