After posting the above query, I received over thirty responses from
members of the TowerTalk and Drake reflectors. While some suggested
alternatives like EFJ, B&W, N4XM and TenTec, the vast majority who
specifically addressed my query came out against the NyeViking (or the
damnation of faint praise) and/or in favor of the Ameritron.
The NyeViking earned only average marks in general and poor reports on
160. While most of those addressing the Ameritron came out in its
favor, those who had problems had primarily come up against the
Starkville Curse of poor quality control. Once all of the nuts and
bolts are tight, the ATR-30 seems to be a solid performer.
My thanks to all who contributed their experiences and opinions. This
is ham radio at its productive best!
