I have heard of two reasons for using end sleeves on preforms.

1. On a long length of guy wire where several inches of ice may build up, as
the ice melts, chunks of it several feet long may come sliding down the guy wire
at break-neck speed and as they hit the exposed ends of your preform at the
bottom, unravel it . . . If you live in a "no ice" area, this should not be a
probem for you.

2. One big advantage of using preforms is that you can install them with your
bare hands. This implies you can remove them with your bare hands also . . . or
with maybe a little help from a pocket knife to get them started. This makes
your tower vulnerable to a little kid with a pocket knife . . . End sleeves are
driven into place and need some work to remove them. Not foolproof, but then
what tower is absolutely foolproof? This is a good reason to at least use them
on the preforms that can be easily reached from the ground.

I have some 1/4" end sleeves in stock for $1.67 each, plus shipping. Preformed
Line Products part number GC-65136. Just one per guy wire would be pretty cheap
insurance, I'd say.
