Remember the rules of pattern multiplication. The pattern you get 
is essentially the "multiplication" of the pattern of each antenna cell.

With an H, you are multiply two stacked arrays (one above the 
other) by the broadside pattern of two antennas in collinear by the 
width of the H.

With a +, the outer antennas (width wise) have no elevation 
directivity enhancement. The center two antennas have no 
azimuthal enhancement.

When that is multiplied together, you will have less directivity for 
the same width and height used in the array.

So the answer is, you will have less directivity and gain with the 
same spacing, and a more "dirty" pattern.

Caution: I did this in my head...without modeling.
