Dan Hearn, N5AR, had a similar suggestion that he mentioned to us  
at the W5DX Bash some years ago - he cuts a strip of the rubber 
material used for drive belts for farm machinery and puts a 
layer between the mast and clamp. This stuff is available 
at farm supply stores and is sort of like inner tube material, 
but with reinforcing material similar to a auto fan belt - very 
tough and durablei, and apparently stands up to UV exposure well.
