I use a 12 X 12 inch, .250 inch thick aluminum plate. 
I drilled and tapped about 100 holes for connection of
the radial wires.  I like the tapped holes as you
don't have to try and get nuts on the bottom side of
the plate.  The Lance Johnson Engineering unit it
great if your not into homebrewing something.
