I'm going to quote from the Audel Millwrights And Mechanics Guide and here
is the following: Lubrication Compounds--There are several wire-rope
lubricants on the market suitable for various operating conditions. One such
lubricant, used successfully by ship riggers, consists of the following: For
Summer Use:
3 3/4 gallons gear compound
5 gallons winter crankcase oil
3/8 gallons apexior (this is an asphalt-base water-resisting paint flammable
slow-drying)
For Winter Use: 3 1/2 gallons gear compound
15 gallons winter crankcase oil
1/2 gallons apexior
In compounding the lubrication in suitable amounts, adjust the amounts you
need to mix.
I'll check my crane books at work on Monday and quote from them if I find
further Information.

For what it's worth I soaked my cable in 10W30 motor oil when I bought
my crank-up tower 25yrs ago. The cable has no rust but has gathered
some grimm from the jet exhaust from a nearby airport. Otherwise the
cable appears to be like new. Water continues to bead on the cable when
 it rains...

Dave: It's very simple. You used 10W30 oil. It's more of an All-weather
Guy
Cable Oil. Based on this I think I'll go even further for the extremes in
SD. I'm going to use 5-40W Mobile 1 and I don't even have any Air Ports
around. I might mix it 50/50 with bike chain oil as it has more "Stickem"
in
it. K7GCO
