Aside from the fact that the path from South America to the southern US is
primarily over water, which allows better skip than land, there is a
phenomenon known as "trans-equatorial propagation" which seems to allow
north-south propagation over the equator when other paths aren't open.  My
advice is to brush up on your Spanish and prepare for the low in the sunspot
cycle.  :^)  Alternatively, you can shunt feed your tower for 80 or 160m and
talk in English at night.
