[TowerTalk] Cutting 3/16" Stainless Steel Guy Cable

I don't agree that bolt cutters are the best way to
cut stainless cable.  Bolt cutters will work if they
are in very good condition.

But shears cut stainless cable much better.  The
difference is that the cutting edges overlap rather
than abutt one another.  Trying to cut stainless with
bolt cutters frequently involves some grinding and
bending etc.  Good shears just cut right thru it.  

Cruising sailors have carried cutters to be able cut
the rigging loose if the boat is dismasted.  For many
years they carried bolt cutters, which have other uses
on the boat too.  But nowadays all knowledgable
cruisers carry actual cable shears.  Trying to cut
heavy stainless cable rigging in a big storm on a
pitching deck with bolt cutters is an invitation to
death.  But the cable shears make quick and clean work
of it.

Of course, none of this matters too much on solid
ground in your back yard.  But cable shears are
better.
