Thanks Brad for the comments!  They were generally helpful.

I don't know where the "side holes" idea came from, I only 
addressed bottom and top holes, bottom for drainage and top 
for venting.  Wicking moisture is a very common occurrence, it 
is why wood shouldn't rest on concrete ... and heated substances
do have a tendency to rise.

I'm afraid I have learned not to lean on traditional practices as 
legitimate grounds for duplicating a practice, that is why I ask lots 
of questions so that I may learn the why and not merely "we've 
never done it that way before".  ;-)
