The E/W southern border of my NE/SW yard is the City of Cincinnati; I'm on
the southern side of an 800-ft-asl gently-sloping mound of earth sitting on
limestone. The peak is about 30ft higher to the NE. I'm surrounded by
urban sprawl and all its electromechanical accoutrements.
Good gnd-mt verticals with good grounds IMBY hear the S2 to 9+20 songs
played by Cincinnati Graft & Extortion in surround-sound, until the precip
cleans the insulators (that's the S2 part, maybe 5% of the time). Did I
mention the lamp-dimmers and God-only-knows-what-else in the chorus?
Good horizontals 50-70ft up in the trees hear stuff. As I write, VK3XU on
7005 is about S5-6 on the horizontal, and inaudible on the noisy vertical.
Analysis: I believe the horizontals 'see' a better view of incoming
signals cuz they're above the foreground clutter.
Recommendation: only to have up as many antennas with 'differing'
characteristics as possible.
In my case, I had a shorty-forty up a half-wave IMBY briefly, and it outdid
anything prior. I'll have another up when I find hardware I can afford.
Meantime, the dipoles and verticals will continue to battle the 'ten-dB
midwest disadvantage'.
No complaints -- I am not 'happy' with the situation, but satisfied, for the
time being.
YMMV -- 73, Dave, K3BHJ
