Tom - Carolina sold to ABF around 4 + years ago - probably longer - I forget -
The drivers job and the contract ( Bill of Lading ) stipulates the carriers responsibility is to get the freight to the rear of the truck. Anything beyond the rear of the trailer is not covered by the carriers insurance, unless, the driver trys to help you with your freight and some how damages it in the unloading process. Then he has the problem of explaining to his superiors why he was trying to help out side of his work area and damaged your freight in a location that he should have never been in. I know it doesn't look good for the driver but I am sure he had obviously been over the coals before. Contrary to belief of several, there is also a substantial charge for a notify before delivery. And if you want to know what would really tick you, wait to see what the charge is for the freight company to handle your money if you have something shipped C.O.D.  - It costs you an extreme amount for you to trust them with your cash.
    On a more merry note - if your shipper pays the shipping they will tell you that you cannot specify what company transports or delivers your goods. You on the other hand while not being able to specify who does, MAY specify who you do not want on your property or hauling your merchandise. Which could be ANY of several different lines until you do get the one you want.

When my TriEX (now Tashjian)  WT51 crankup arrived I had a half dozen 
ham friends over and they helped lift it off the truck.  The driver did 
nothing but stand there and complain how long it was taking us to unload 
it.  But after Carolina Freight had damaged with a forklift  my earlier 
tower I wasn't taking any chances and did a thorough inspection and just 
told the driver he'd have to wait before I signed anything.  In the 
earlier tower episode I had to file suit against Carolina Freight to get 
them to pay for a new tower.   They stated that I had on purpose damaged 
it so I could file a claim, when one of their freight handlers on a 
freight dock someplace had rammed a forklift into it and sprung several 
welds.  Thank  goodness for ARRL volunteer counsels like K5LP.   
Carolina at least did call a day in advance before delivery as they said 
I had to have enough people here because their driver would do nothing 
to help.
