That's exactly what I did. That got rid of those awful plosive 'S' noises.
In fact I think you can see it on the pic on my web site for last CQ WW. It
looks a mess, but works fine. Well, no one has told me it doesn't!

I have noticed that my DX insert Heil mic is very noisy.  It is catching all
the S sounds and my breathing through the mic.  My normal mic position is
about 1 and 1/2 inches from my mouth.
I have turned down the gain to almost no ALC showing and it is still poor
quality.  There is only a very thin strip of grey foam back and front of the
insert. Is this normal?  I feel I want to wrap a bundle of foam round the
mic to act as a wind shield!
It is better, but not perfect, on the Mk5 but very poor in the IC746.
Any comments appreciated
