Mike, my original suggestion was not that the contest should be closed down but that the two legs should be merged in to one dual mode event with a choice of CW only, SSB only or mixed mode.
You are quite right that it is a good starter contest. Indeed last year saw the highest number of UK entries since 1989, when my records began. The CW leg hasn't mirrored this, being about 20% down on its peak, at the last peak, so to speak!
Whilst I can understand your thoughts about domestic contests, we do have a substantial number, several of which are not really doing much good, particularly in attracting new customers.
Incidently, Club Calls Contest also had a record entry last year. It's popularity has almost doubled since 1989, with a steady rsie in recent years. Many necomers get their first exposure to contesting in this event!
We need to keep promoting CW so a combined event would help to raise awareness whilst reducing the overall number of events.
I also used a similar argument for a combined Field Day where the drop is more dramatic, CW down from 104 to 54 with a steady recent decline, whereas SSB down from 60 to 40 with a small upward movement in recent years.
There is also a problem of date. October is quite a busy month, with these two events, plus the FOC London Dinner (date and venue must be due for a rethink!), HF Convention and of course, CQWW SSB at the end of the month.
My postings over this weekend have centred on the theme that you just can't expect people to be able to support all these activities. Andy PIQ has picked up the baton very neatly. There needs to be more discussion but as Richard CWI said, there also needs to be some ACTION.

Subject: [UK-CONTEST] RSGB 21/28
I keep seeing reference to the need to close down the RSGB 21/28 contest. Having missed the earlier discussion on this one can anyone tell me why it should go. I used to enjoy it especially when I was in the 100w to a dipole or vertical days (I used to be able to get the smaller ae's into my garden!!).
I only stopped taking part when I discovered that the adjudication was not in accordance with the rules, but I note that the rules have now been clarified so I may well restart.
I still feel that its a good one to wet the appetite on.
My view is that we must retain a good selection of domestic contests if only for the purpose of wetting appetites I suspect not many newcomers would want to start in the international contests. Especially with the increasing levels of poor operating that we see.
