[UK-CONTEST] IOTA Logging Advice Please

Dave, at GU8D we have used NA from our first excursion to Sark in 1996 until
this year. We initially had problems when we scrolled back through the log,
but an upgrade to NA sorted that problem out. After that we only had the
occasional crash and certainly nothing like the problems experienced by
G3TXZ's crew. Indeed, we used NA and 3 networked computers the year we
actually managed to place 2nd with about 2900 Qs and just short of 500
mults.

This year we used Writelog and 4 machines Etherneted into a hub, with a
combo of desk/notebook, XP and 98. It all worked extremely well. Not sure I
would want to go back to a DOS program for any logging now.

The only area for concern seems to be how WL allocates serial numbers. If
computer A is the main Run machine and C is the main mult machine, then when
a callsign is typed into the Entry field of C the number allocated cannot be
used by A. If B and D also type in a callsign, those numbers are also not
available. Too complex to go into detail here but that didn't happen with
NA. We gave the number allocated by each respective machine, not much else
you can do.

BTW I see that the latest version of WL has an upgraded Cabrillo format
which should help log checking procedure.

Subject: [UK-CONTEST] IOTA Logging Advice Please

Members of the Cray Valley RS are planning to enter next year's IOTA
contest from the Isles of Scilly, EU-011. The callsign will be M8C/P.

We've booked the accommodation and ferry, organised a site,
and are now starting detailed planning. The major area of
uncertainty is what logging software to use. We plan to have two
stations, networked, so SD is not an option. Having read G3TXZ's
account in CDXC Digest, NA isn't high on the list, and Writelog is
looking like the front runner. It seems most if not all programs have
problems with serial numbers. I'd be grateful for advice on the pros
and cons of WL, TR, CT and any others.

Thanks, Dave G4BUO
