Perhaps, but perhaps not. The conditions were indeed interesting. I entered
the fray around 2015 and there were several stations at S9+ while the rest
were in the mush. I was beginning to think those loud ones were running
linears, but within 15 minutes most of them, too, were in the noise whereas
others had increased dramatically in strength. The most obvious instance was
later in the contest when I worked GM0OGN (Outer Hebrides) at 20 over 9, and
yet within 2 minutes he was down to S5. It was the stations in the extremes
(Cornwall, Scotland) who seemed to have the advantage in this one, whereas
those of us in the Home Counties were too close to the masses, and had no
skywave propagation. So perhaps this is fair, as the distant participants
tend to lose out in some of the other events. For myself, I gave up after 19
QSOs - kept calling folk, only to have them CQ in my face. This is with the
same 80m antenna that, in the FOC Marathon at the weekend, had given me easy
QSOs with ZL, A4, all over the US, etc!
