The people defending SD are those using it.  Isn't it possible
they know what they're talking about?

What you interpret as a "design fault" is a design feature!
It may not be what you're used to, but that's not the point.

F2 (when running) sends callsign + exchange
F6 (when S&P) sends exchange.

Nothing too difficult there?
