Adrain,

In addition to the other comments, I have found a very useful approach is 
to monitor the noise at different times of the day. So, for example, lights 
tend not to be a problem during daylight hours (or at 06:30 in most houses 
come to that), whereas programmable devices (in my case a neighbour's 
recycling water softener) can come on in the early hours but are not there 
the rest of the day.

One thing that you really want is the noise to be there all the 
time!  Intermittent noise sources are a nightmare to find.
