...and another from G0HVQ.....my first attempt at an all-CW event.....80W or
so to a ground-mounted Hustler 4BTV with buried radial system.
Band QSOs Pts Cty ZN
3.5 26 28 14 4
7 205 363 56 16
14 244 560 51 14
21 35 69 20 11
Total 510 1020 141 45
Score: 189,720
Highlights
- 15m didn't seem that bad on Sat, 9M2TO, A41XF & 4L0A plus some I/S5/9A
(bit of Es I suspect)
- On Sun, 20m closed then re-opened to the US an hour later, well into
darkness, Tony 'ZRJ and I seemed to have the pick of the US
- It was MUCH easier for us lower-power stations to get some QSOs in the log
early in the event compared to the SSB leg
- I think the DX cluster helped (although I wasn't running it), as tuning
across the band you could immediately tell the spotted stations and
subsequent pile-ups, so tuning away you got to find the other DX before it
was spotted, had to be quick though, I just managed a VK on 40m before the
mass descended.
Lowlights
- 15m was dead Sun morning
- Just as it did open (12-ish), had to take daughter to local hospital and
didn't return until after dusk, so probably missed the best condx
- Could have done with a decent 80m aerial, had planned to knock up a vert
but just didn't have time
- I hadn't really planned to do the whole contest, it just sort of happened
(perhaps that's a highlight!)
Thoroughly enjoyed it - was a bit apprehensive to start with, thinking my CW
wasn't up to it, but there were only a few stations all weekend that were
too fast, even found myself hovering around the 27wpm mark towards the end.
And didn't have a horse voice, I could get into this CW contesting :-)
