Re the field point. Thinking about this a little more;

Surely many (if not most) contacts are not actually with portable stations  
in these contests - and thus the fall in QSO numbers is not just less  
portable stations (and not just in the UK).

And if each team stays at home, would that not mean more people might be  
available to contact overall for those that go out?
