Yes the ICOM protocol is called CI-V and afaik all the interface does is
to convert the TTL (?) level sigs from the computer into summat the xcvr
can understand as a serial stream. Caveat, I don't know the 7800 but all
other modern ICOM rigs I've ever owned use the same 3.5mm termination at
the xcvr.
You may already know this, but you will need to tell your controlling
software the correct CI-V address of the 7800. It may also be helpful to
set "transceive off" in the 7800 menu system. If you use N1MM logger, it
will do most of this transparently for you.
Trouble is you might not want to go back to Yaesu afterwards ;-)
