[UK-CONTEST] Redundant Reports

I was surprised to read that some operators need a '5NN lead in' to tell
them that a serial number is coming next but suppose that if it's really
needed 'NR' could be substituted.

I'd be happy to see post codes rather than full locators substituted for 5NN
however I'd prefer to send & receive a fairly realistic reports even if
these don't use the whole range 1-9 (do we need 1-9. wouldn't 1-5 be
adequate?). Without looking at the S meter I'll give a signal that's a bit
down in the noise S7, one that's getting a bit difficult to copy S5 and one
that I'm really having a job with S3. I think that the Readability has
always been superfluous as are Tone reports although some modern
transceivers really deserve 599C! Does the adjudication process even look at
reports?

What I find really annoying is to hear a DXpedition giving 59(9) reports to
everyone surely this isn't necessary and it would be very interesting to get
some idea of the strength of signals being received by the DX station.

A friend who was a keen Top Band DX'er in the 60's & 70's and who had been
inactive for ages made a short come back to the band but when he discovered
that everyone send him 5NN reports even outside contests said that the whole
thing was a waste of time & hasn't been back on the air since. This is a
shame as he has a super QTH with lots of space for antennas.
