It's almost always the PSU's that cause the problem, Graham.
I've found PSU's by Delta Power - Model ADP-45CB REV D or 45GB REV G (19v 
2.4A) are quiet, the difference is the Roca connector, one is 2.1 the other 
2.6 (funnily enough my newer laptop came with a Delta PSU 19v 4.74A which is 
noisy!)
My Toshiba Tecra 8100 came with a noisy 15v 3A PSU, I now run it with a 
modified PSU from a desktop computer which used a voltage regulator and a 
power mosfet to derive the 3.3v rail from the 5v rail, they now supply 15v 
from the 19v rail - very quiet.
