Brian,

In my experience working Zone 3 on 80m longpath from Zone 20 in the 
autumn & winter (CQWW periods) was actually pretty reliable most days 
around local sunset in Cyprus.
Didn't need 4 squares or QRO either, just simple wires and 100w - the 
west coast boys produce all the gain. 40m longpath into W6 during 
Oct-Feb even more common.
