So only rich people with plenty of disposable income can be serious contesters then?

I think that's actually quite an insulting attitude.   Someone can be a "serious" contester without having a station that has any chance of getting anywhere near winning a contest.   I thought we were trying to get more people into this game not put them off,  there are plenty of older rigs out there that can do a perfectly good job without having to spend a fortune (if you haven't got it).     There's people like Calum McCormick doing a brilliant job at getting young scouts hooked on amateur radio and contesting in particular,   I can see some of them becoming "serious contesters", but having the spare cash for a modern rig, less likely just yet.
