Paul, not sure if the was tongue in cheek or in ernest, so ...
Yes it's a contest, but on VHF and above, real reports help contesters know what the propagation is like.
On Field Day, which is a pretty big contest, we always give out real reports.
I shall continue to give a real report (ok, tends to be 53, 55, 59) until the contest committee say we shouldn't.
At least on VHF anyway.
