Hi Nick et al
The proposed scrapping of the 21/28MHz contest seems to me a symptom of a
wider malaise - namely why we in the UK cannot run international contests.
Yes, the IOTA contest is highly successful and enjoyed worldwide, but is
only one 24-hour event in the whole contesting year. We seem
unable/reluctant to have our own UK events, based on the repeated message
'there is not enough UK activity to support such an event'
I think that to use UK activity levels to decide whether an international
contest could be organised or not is not necessarily the correct thinking.
For example, 21 and 28MHz hopefully should get better over the next few
years and there are literally thousands of contest-minded operators
worldwide who would participate in any international event organised by the
RSGB.
There is no hope of encouraging more UK participation if we keep deleting
existing contests. This first weekend of October is a prime slot
propagation-wise, which should not be given up without greater thought.
Looking at the contest calendar, the UK seems to be just about the only
country without its own 'international' HF contest.
