[UK-CONTEST] 70MHz Noise level

They definately are Stewart - it was fairly obvious when I worked Alan (ZUK) that he was hearing my 25W better than I could hear him. 20 years ago it was the other way round - I could hear you boys but my (then) 100W wasn't always enough to attract you.....

And Ken, think your comment is reasonably accurate. I live in a small village and most of my noise is found in directions where there are fewer houses. Beaming at Cambridge doesn't appear to be the worst direction - opposite to what I would have expected. Maybe one day I'll do a bit of DF to see what the culprits are but it is just a general broadband mush rather than obvious individual signals - most noticeable on the SDR as I turned the beam!

At last, admission of higher noise levels on 4m in G. Our transmitters up
here may be working after all!!

I remember when I moved from Slough to here (just west of Cambridge) in the
mid 80's making the comment how nice and quite the bands are......

I wish - had an S7 noise level on 4M when I fired up the ancient gear for
the Trophy. Not much better on 2M either. Even get noise on 23cm!

"A definite rise in noise level" is that all? With my 4m Xvter I/P
terminated I see S1, with the beam connected the noise level averages
between
S2 (North W) & S5 (S & NE), this is general noise without any apparent
spectral peaks, on top of that there are various carriers across the band
(one on 70.2!).
I wish that I'd taken some noise level readings before every house became
full of PC's & other electronic gadgets,  nearby there are now several
hundred houses on what were just orchards when we first moved here. If I
struggle  to copy some stations you now know why!
