Chris, Stewart (GM4AFF) and Clive, I have to profoundly disagree with 
you all on this.

Every group should be thinking
after every contest 'how can we improve our score next time?'

Why? If a group just enjoys a weekend in the country and a barbecue with 
a bit of radio thrown in that's fine by me.  The main point is that they 
are there, enjoying themselves, doing amateur radio and providing 
stations for the more competitive groups to work.  They may also be 
nurturing future contesters and amateurs which they certainly wouldn't 
be if they weren't there.  What does it matter if they end up in the 
bottom of the table? VHF contests would be awful if only the competitive 
stations entered - we would all work each other in the first hour and 
that would be it.  I agree that we should structure the sections as best 
we can to encourage people to improve but we must not put down people 
who for one reason or another are happy to stay in the bottom half of 
the results table - the great thing is that they have entered.   I'm 
never going to do much good from home in VHF contests because of my poor 
location but it doesn't stop me coming on.
