[UK-CONTEST] 2012 UKAC = Rule changes

If you start down this route then do we ban people who live on hill tops
because in effect they have a mast that is very much taller than the guy who
lives in the valley?

I live in a valley and therefore cannot hear stations that guys on nearby
hill tops can hear at S9 or more. They have a lot more than a 3dB advantage.
This is about contesting and if someone has an advantage for whatever reason
great to them.

Incidentally do the calculation and you will find that a 3dB advantage on 2m
troposcatter, which is what we are using, gives a distance increase of about
25Km. If you are already doing 500Km then 25km does not add in many if any
extra QSOs. To get another 100Km +11dB is needed, which would require going
from a single Yagi to 16 of them.

I agree with Bob - go for erp. It is fairer and you dont get the situation
like some find themselves where they dont fit any section.

To get an extra 3dB or so you generally have to double the length of the
antenna or add a second one. The AR rules allow you to do the former but not
the later. Not all of us can fit a 10m long antenna over our property, I am
limited to about 2m but I could easily stack two vertically. I havent as
then I have to enter Open.

The issue will be at what level you set the erp for AR. My guess would be
2.5kW refered to isotropic which would cater for most typical antennas with
100W in. To allow for someone with an m2 or similar you would have to raise
it to 5kW or so. Of course this means you no longer have to take the feeder
loss into account unless you have 400W!!!
