Contest report from the Wiltshire Wanderers (G8NEY/p )

The Wiltshire Wanderers, wandered again this year into Somerset to operate from the site we found for last years
winning restricted section of Trobridge DARC's entry to NFD in IO81RF near Shepton Mallet.

Our objectives were to better last years score, try out the site with a 2m set up (we didn't elect to do 2m during NFD),
to try out some new equipment and to have a serious amount of fun.

Chris G0HFX arrived on site Friday afternoon, alone, and began setting up the the operating shack (his Citroen Relay van)
and a large tarpaulin sheet which provided a lean-to annexe to the van for kit storage and a refreshment area

The wx was overcast with a strong easterly wind but at least dry and fairly warm (15c).
Working steadily through the afternoon and evening the first station was up and running with the first set of 2 x 17 ele
on a 40ft trailer mast.
The mast was not pumped-up to full height so as not to tempt fate in the strong wind.

After trial calls and reports of 59+ using only 10 watts and receiving the Angus beacon at 59++ it was considered to be working FB
.All 4 x 17 ele Tonnas were a recent s/h purchase.
It was then the first problem arose, the amplifier sequencer had been left at home.
Frantic calls home and later to Dave M0GHZ, who was arriving in the morning ensured one would be available.
So to bed at some time after midnight.

Dave and Peter (2E0NEY) arrived at about 10-30am and the second installation was begun, second pair of aerials built, installed and errected--testing "damm" --a fault--v poor SWR
Dismantle and trace to faulty piece of LDF450 flexible and sods law the most difficult to get to.
Eventually replaced --all ok--now to set up & test the rs of the station.
Time really pressing so started late with one ant system only and Peter on the mic, while Dave & Chris sorted and connected up the 2nd rx and controls.

Finally all running but lost first 30 mins and another 40mins with only one ant system.

Stations now being worked Kms and Mults quickley mounting--all appears to be running smoothly with 5++ sig rpts being rxd.
Friendly competition between us to see who gets best DX, we operated generally in one hour shifts.

Late into the evening ---"Phutt"--the EHT p/s fails--frantic rearranging of things to keep us on air--determined capacitor bank
had gone short circuit and we have no replacements to hand--well the PS has served very well over the last 35+ years in all sorts of contest conditions, so what can one expect--run the station barefoot until the spare PS can be installed good job a spare p-supply was brought, just in case--thus more time lost, but at least very few stations calling us now its nearing midnight--decide to shut down for the night, wind getting stronger and beginning to rain--lower the masts for the night.

UP and on again at 0500am Z, and no more dramatic incidents but a steady number of Q's, mults and countries filling the log.

Bonus for the weekend--the station was setup and dismantled in reasonably fine wx--didnt get wet for a change.

Rawlog results---Q's  322---11 DXCC's---99 district mults,---60 locators---10M++ points

Points/Q cica 300 Best DX GM0HTT io89 877 Ks

DXCC's G/GW/GU/GD/GI/GM/DL/EI/ON/PA/F no exceptional DX

66% UK 33% DX approximately

All objectives fully met and a safe return journey home, but all of us completely shattered---roll on next one

We certainly wont have done as well as some of the East coast station but we are satisfied with the w/e's work

Many thanks to all who are in the log some made under trying conditions.

73 de Dave M0GHZ--Chris G0HFX--Peter 2E0NEY

I had 2 ES QSO's last year to Italy.No GD,GI,GJ,GU or EI heard or worked.See http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.rsgbcc.org/vhf/kml_files/2012/7o5KKe9EIhpbC8voKOQBH74hijuKvha
