I seem to remember that Yaesu changed some of their 
communications
protocalls and current software uses the newest.  You may 
have to
get a software upgrade from yaesu.
I also seem to recall that the software, on the 990, is 
not
field upgradable.
Time to talk to yourself in short unfinished 
sentences<grin>
