Reid Brandon from EIMAC suggested something very unique: 

Greyhound Bus Terminal-to-terminal package shipping. No more expensive than 
UPS; you pick it up or have it picked up at the bus terminal, no damage.

On to your amplifier:  Did you remove the tubes and try the experiment?

Did you open the +HV line and try the experiment?  This might indicate
if the flash/bang is in the power supply department or in the tank.

Look carefully from where the DC enters the RF cage, right through all the 
plate choke and bypass device departments. You might have a close proximity of 
hardware that's bridging an arc when the DC voltage is high enough to jump.
